Associate professor Innovation Mgt. & chair Standardisation

Research / Academic
Rotterdam

Come join our team at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) and explore the connections between standardisation management and the cutting-edge world of innovation management. Your efforts can help to enrich RSM’s research and education, and together we can write the next chapter in the world of standardisation, innovation and transformation.

Job description
As RSM’s associate professor of Innovation Management and chair of Standardisation Management, you’re at the forefront of innovation and you contribute with your research and teaching in this dynamic field.

Your role
In this unique dual placement, you create a fertile ground for investigating standardisation at various levels and from different perspectives. Your role resides within the Innovation Management group of RSM’s department of Technology and Operations Management.

In addition to your primary focus, the department's expertise in supply chain management and business information management presents an excellent opportunity for you to weave the threads of standardisation management into these relevant areas.

Standardisation requires a broad, managerial perspective. In your role, you connect relevant stakeholders such as the Stichting Koninklijk Nederlands Normalisatie Instituut (NEN) with the university by developing, for example, innovative methods and techniques or by validating the impact of standardisation within or across organisations, whether small and medium-sized business or corporate businesses. With the advent of new technologies like AI, there is a tremendous opportunity for innovation, where your scientific insights are invaluable. Our vision is to establish a strong bond between our school and standardisation stakeholders. Within this vision, you create change, build consensus and drive innovation – all integral aspects of standardisation.

Our Innovation Management group is globally renowned for both the quality of research and excellence in teaching. Your role as associate professor of Innovation Management is permanent, while your role as chair of Standardisation Management is currently a term of five years and supported by funding from the NEN.

About chair of Standardisation Management
Established over three decades ago, the role of chair of Standardisation Management is truly one-of-a-kind. It emphasises a managerial focus that sets RSM apart. We’re proud to be part of the SOONS network, a hub for education and research in standardisation within the Netherlands, and to foster collaboration with research groups at Delft, Eindhoven, Tilburg and other universities. Over the years, our chair has played a leading role in organisations such as the European Academy for Standardisation (EURAS), and we continue to be active participants in scientific and professional communities dedicated to advancing the field of standardisation, both nationally and internationally.

Requirements:

We don’t expect you to have all the answers upon arrival; this journey involves continuous learning and knowledge development. Our team values your ambition to take our understanding of standardisation beyond its current state of expertise.

We are interested when you possess the following:

  • A PhD in management and organisation or a closely related field.
  • A strong commitment to high-quality, impactful research, demonstrated through publications in top management and business journals.
  • The ability to engage in multi-disciplinary research to bridge the gaps between diverse fields.
  • Exceptional teaching skills that ignite enthusiasm in the classroom.
  • Experience and/or proven interest in standardisation.
  • A passion for connecting standardisation to innovation, not only to drive business improvements but also to contribute to societal and economic impact.
  • Full professional proficiency in English. Proficiency in Dutch is a bonus, as it bolsters the Netherlands' prominent role in standardisation.

At RSM we view diversity as an essential aspect of our identity; it’s not merely a ‘nice-to-have’ quality. We embrace diversity in all its dimensions, and it is a key consideration in our hiring process.

Salary Benefits:

This position is offered by the Innovation Management group of RSM's department of Technology and Operations Management. It's your opportunity to gain a full-time role in an inclusive university environment which values and invests in your professional and personal growth.

Innovation Management is one of three critical business areas covered by the department of Technology and Operations Management and is focused on developing strategies, structures and processes to generate, select and implement innovations.

The group comprises around 20 faculty and PhD students. We teach our own master programme as well as in two of RSM’s bachelor programmes and several of the school’s full-time and part-time master and MBA programmes.
