Lebensraum and the art of physical comedy
Lebensraum is the latest work from Swedish theatre-maker Jakop Ahlbom. Influenced by the likes of Buster Keaton and physical comedy styles popular in the 1920s, Lebensraum is a hilarious slapstick performance featuring a constantly shifting set and frenetic acting.
Set in a single room, the show focuses on two men who, lacking a female presence, design a "mechanical" cleaning lady. Taking on a life of her own, the robotic movements and hijinks that ensue mimic that of a silent film come to life as the actors flip, fall and tumble their way across the stage in a vain attempt at maintaining the harmony of their household.
Instead of a soundtrack, the otherwise silent performance features the musical accompaniment of Ralph Mulder and Leonard Lucieer of the band Alamo Racetrack.
Jakop Ahlbom's slapstick style
A native of Sweden, theatre-maker Jakop Ahlbom moved to the Netherlands in the early 1990s to study at the Theatre School (Mime) in Amsterdam. After working with a string of successful theatre groups, Ahlbom began to produce his own pieces. Through his prodcutions he has developed a distinct style that mark his oeuvre by mixing elements of dance, illusion and mime.
Ahlbom won the 2012 VSCD Mime Award at the Dutch Theatre Festival in 2012 and will continue to hone his trademark style in the upcoming Lebensraum II.
