PhD Candidate: Change towards Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

You will conduct research on formal and informal leadership practices that foster gender equality, diversity and inclusion. The central research question is: Which leadership practices do formal and informal change agents employ to support and resist change towards more equality? You will examine how these change agents draw on their networks in order to realise their agentic power, which may be both enhanced and limited by the way the organisation structures the responsibility for equality change.

 

The PhD project is part of a larger research programme that contributes to our knowledge on how inequalities are reproduced and countered in organisational processes. We have a specific interest in leadership practices in low-paid labour organisations.

 

Your tasks will be to conduct ethnographic case study research using a multi-level research design, to write scientific articles, and to complete a PhD dissertation within four years. You will also participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities, and contribute to teaching.

Requirements:

  • a Master’s Degree, preferably a Research Master’s degree, in gender and diversity studies, organisation studies, sociology, anthropology, or a related field;
  • proven interests in and knowledge of theories on inequality, diversity and inclusion;
  • relevant research experience, including qualitative fieldwork;
  • excellent command of written and spoken English and proficiency in Dutch;
  • the ability to finish your PhD thesis in four years, i.e. good skills in planning, taking initiatives, academic writing.

Salary Benefits:

  • employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE
  • the gross monthly starting salary amounts to €2,266 in the first year, based on a 38-hour working week, and will increase to €2,897 in the fourth and fifth year (salary scale P)
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • duration of the contract: 4 years (1.0 FTE) or 5 years (0.8 FTE)
  • you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years
  • as part of the contract, you will participate in teaching for approximately 10% of your work time
  • you will be classified as a PhD Candidate (Promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO)
  • you will be able to make use of our Dual Career Service where our Dual Career Officer will assist with family related support, such as child care, and help your partner prepare for the local labour market and with finding an occupation
