What are cookies?

A cookie is a small piece of data (text file) that a website – when visited by a user – asks your browser to store on your device in order to remember information about you, such as your language preference or login information. Those cookies are set by us and called first-party cookies. We also use third-party cookies – which are cookies from a domain different than the domain of the website you are visiting – for our advertising and marketing efforts. You can think of cookies as providing a "memory" for the website, enabling it to recognise a user and respond appropriately.

How do IamExpat Websites use cookies?

A visit to a page of an IamExpat Website may generate the following types of cookie.

1. Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.

2. Performance cookies

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.

IamExpat Websites use Google Analytics to collect statistics on visits to the websites. You can opt out of Google Analytics here.

Google Analytics and Display Advertising

We have updated our Google Analytics tracking code to support Google Display Advertising. This enables Google Analytics to collect data about your traffic via the Google Ad Manager cookie in addition to data collected through the standard Google Analytics implementation.

Display Advertising allows us to enable features in Analytics that are not available through standard implementations (Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting). We use this data to develop the website and content around our users’ interests.

You can opt out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising and customise Google Display Network ads using the Ads Preferences Manager available here.

3. Functional cookies

These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies then some or all of these services may not function properly.

Registration cookies

When you join IamExpat, we generate cookies that signal whether you are logged in or not. Our servers use these cookies to work out which account you are signed in with. It also allows us to associate any comments you post with your username. If you have not selected "remember me," your cookies get deleted when you either close your browser or shut down your computer.

Other cookies

In order to be able to serve you better, we use a cookie that allows us to see if you have javascript enabled. We also use a cookie regarding your cookie consent, which prevents the repetitive display of the related notification at the bottom of your browser.

4. Targeting cookies

These cookies may be set through our site by our advertising partners. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant adverts on other sites. They do not store directly personal information, but are based on uniquely identifying your browser and internet device. If you do not allow these cookies, you will experience less targeted advertising.

Advertising cookies

These cookies are used by our ad server software, Google Ad Manager, to manage which advertisements are placed on our website and to measure clicks on those ads. These cookies cannot be used to identify individuals and are not used to deliver specific content, advertising or otherwise, to your browser.

Third-party cookies

On some pages of the IamExpat websites, third parties may set their own cookies, for the purposes of tracking the success of their application, customising the application for you, displaying relevant ads, or measuring the success of an ad. For example, when you share an article using a social media sharing button on an IamExpat Website, the social network that has created the button will record that you have done this.

Also, we sometimes embed video content from websites such as YouTube and Vimeo. As a result, when you visit a page with content embedded from one of these sites you may be presented with cookies from that website. In some cases, IamExpat Media does not control the dissemination of these cookies and you should check the relevant third-party website for more information about them.
