We invite applicants for a research assistant position within the EMI Twente to develop, characterize and apply hollow fiber membranes in various areas, such as water purification, gas separation or the separation of organic compounds. We are an independent R&D-organization and conduct contract research projects in the field of membrane science and technology directly for industrial clients spread around the world. Our mission is to be a hotbed for future membrane innovations, valorizing the academic know-how from the University of Twente and transferring it to society. Our projects are practical in nature and typically combine materials science aspects with process technology. You will become part of a team of membrane researchers and conduct research projects on your own or together with one of the senior team members. We are part of and fully integrated within the academic research cluster membrane science and technology.

As a research assistant within the EMI Twente:

  • You provide assistance in long-term research activities in which you plan, organize, conduct, and communicate your own work
  • You will carry out your own short-term R&D-projects
  • You assist in the analysis and interpretation of your results
  • You develop new methods and techniques to characterize and analyze membranes and their processes. You keep up to date with new research related methods and techniques
  • You manage and maintain lab equipment and design, build and commission new equipment required for future projects
  • You contribute to and implement health and safety procedures in our labs.


  • You have at least a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in chemical engineering or chemistry with affinity to materials science and/or membrane technology;
  • You are a creative person that shows initiative with a hands-on mentality;
  • You are a team worker and possess excellent communication skills.
  • You are fluent in English and have at least basic knowledge of the Dutch language.

Salary Benefits:

You will be appointed for one year with a possible
extension to two years within a very stimulating applied research and scientific environment. The university offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues.

  • Starting salary will be € 2.514,- gross per month;
  • A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
