August 2026: 9 changes expats in the Netherlands need to know about

A new month is here, and while everyone makes the most of the summer season in the Netherlands, there are also some important changes to keep in mind. Here’s what expats in the Netherlands need to know about in August 2026.

1. Dutch schools reopen after summer holidays

After some time off to enjoy the sunshine and family time, the summer holidays are coming to an end as children head back to school in August. Schools in the north will reopen their doors first on August 16, followed by those in the south on August 23 and finally schools in the central regions will reopen on August 30.

Expect roads across the Netherlands to be busy around those dates, as holidaymakers return home in time to get their kids back to school.

2. Nationwide fireworks ban officially introduced

For years, the Netherlands has been debating whether to introduce a nationwide fireworks ban and last year the motion was finally approved. After some adjustments to allow for certain groups to apply for exemptions, the nationwide fireworks ban will officially come into effect on August 1.

3. 49-euro discount train ticket can no longer be purchased

Earlier this summer, NS launched the 49-euro ticket, also known as the Nederland Dal Vrij subscription, selling 270.000 passes in the first month. With this discount pass, Dutch passengers could enjoy unlimited travel on all Dutch trains during off-peak hours and weekends for just 49 euros per month.

However, the deal was only ever planned to be temporary and is now coming to an end. The last day to purchase the subscription is July 31, after which it is only valid until August 31. If travellers fail to cancel the subscription in time, they will have to fork out 127,95 euros per month for the same subscription.

4. Content made using AI must be labelled

On August 2, the second stage of the European Union’s AI Act will be enforced. The act is the first-ever legal framework on AI.

All companies, including those in the Netherlands, that distribute content primarily created using AI must label it as such. However, this label doesn’t need to be an explicit label that says “AI-generated content”; it may also be a traceability mark embedded in the file and detectable using verification tools. 

The third part of the AI Act will be enforced on December 2, 2027, and will regulate how AI is used in recruitment tools, credit scoring, education, law enforcement, border control, and critical infrastructure.

5. Canal Parade takes place for WorldPride in Amsterdam

WorldPride kicked off in Amsterdam on July 25, but the crème de la crème of the celebrations will be the famous Canal Parade taking place on Saturday, August 1. More than 80 decorated boats will sail along the canals as thousands of spectators watch.

This year, there will even be a grandstand on the Prinsengracht, providing seating for 10.000 Pride visitors for the first time. 

6. Perseid meteor shower to brighten Dutch skies

While the weather is still warm, a nighttime stroll might give you the perfect opportunity to glimpse a meteor shower. On August 12 to 13, the Perseids meteor shower will peak, giving you the best chance to see up to 150 meteors an hour. 

7. Solar eclipse visible over the Netherlands

Another natural phenomenon to take note of is the solar eclipse - and it just so happens to take place on the same day as the meteor shower on August 12. From the Netherlands, we will be able to witness 90 percent of the sun being eclipsed as the moon moves between the Earth and the sun. 

The next time such a memorable eclipse will take place is in 2081, so make sure to visit a viewing location to see the special event safely.

8. Final lap for Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort

The Dutch coastal town of Zandvoort will be taken over by the F1 world for the final time as the Dutch Grand Prix takes place on August 21 to 23. The last edition will also be special, as it is the first and only time an F1 Sprint race is held in Zandvoort.

As the Formula 1 in Zandvoort is ending, expect crowds as everyone races to the track to see the final go-round. 

9. Loads of events and festivals to make the most of summer

With summer in full swing, there are several popular events and festivals to make the most of the warmer weather. From Europe’s biggest book market, the Deventer Book Market, to the Loveland and Lowlands festivals, it’s a month full of possibilities for your calendar.
