One of the major forces in social media, Twitter, is to open an office in Amsterdam, establishing itself in a key centre in the social media market worldwide.

Social Media Penetration

Around 40 percent of businesses in the Netherlands use social media, and last year it was announced that the country had the number one penetration worldwide for both Twitter and Linkedin. Estimates put the amount of Twitter users in the Netherlands at three million.

Also, a staggering 96 percent of Dutch internet users are engaged with social media, making the Netherlands the perfect location for the giants of online interaction to set themselves up.

Facebook

Twitter follows one of its major rivals, Facebook, in setting up a sales office in the capital. Advertising space will be sold to Dutch companies from their new base as they hope to capatalise on the popularity of the social network and Amsterdam’s position as a hub for new internet technology.

The Amsterdam office will be joined by bases in Paris and Madrid as Twitter looks to extend its business throughout Europe.
