It has been misty and cold in the Netherlands for quite some time now, but stormy weather is on its way to shake things up. Strong winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour are expected as Storm Éowyn brushes the Netherlands on Friday.

Stormy Friday on the cards for the Netherlands

After a week of dense fog, the Netherlands is finally set to see some sunshine on Thursday, January 23. There will also be the occasional rain shower throughout the day, with the wind picking up speed as we head into the evening.

With rain and strong wind gusts of up to 70 km / h blowing across the coastal provinces on Friday morning, cycling to work might be challenging. With the wind forecast to gain power on the northwestern coast of Noord-Holland, Dutch cities such as Amsterdam and Alkmaar can expect wind speeds to reach 90 km / h, possibly even 100km / h, by early afternoon.

According to Weeronline, the mercury will rise to around 9 degrees celsius during the day, and the wind will move to the south of the country and die down. As we head into Friday evening, the weather will be calmer and mostly dry throughout the country.

Strong wind gusts from Storm Éowyn to hit the Netherlands

The strong winds that are brushing over the Netherlands are from Storm Éowyn, which is moving across the British Isles towards Norway. Ireland and the United Kingdom both have weather warnings in effect, with winds of up to 130km/h and stronger expected to be “severe, damaging and extremely destructive”, according to the Irish meteorological service Met Éireann.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has predicted some turbulent weather for Thursday evening and Friday, but has not yet issued a weather warning for the Netherlands.
