The Dutch weather has been nothing short of surprising the last few months, with snow, ice and sunshine following each other in short periods of time. And, you may have already felt this but, this year, March was actually colder than January.

January vs. March in the Netherlands

This year, January was actually warmer than March. On average temperatures at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) measuring point De Bilt were 5,6C. Usually, the average temperature in January is 3,1C.

During the first month of the year, there were only four days, which resulted in a light frost and the lowest temperature was -1,4C. January earned a number 10 spot on the list of warmest January months this year, and January 24, 2018, was the warmest January 24 ever recorded, at 14,4C.

March was much colder, with the coldest start to spring ever and 10 days of frost, two of which resulted in a moderate frost. The lowest temperature in March was also much lower than in January, namely -8,3C during the night.

In March, the average temperature was between 4,2C and 4,7C, much lower than the usual 6,2C. The weather was particularly unstable in March, with March 10 taking the title of “first official spring-weather day”, but a week later March 17 being the coldest ever recorded.

Sun or snow on Easter day?

The last week of March will be colder than we are accustomed to at this time of year. However, it is not yet certain how cold it will actually be. According to Weeronline, several computer calculations show winter weather and a possibility of snow and frost.

The temperature predictions for Easter day are even less certain, with maximum temperatures ranging from 3C to 21C.
