There are set to be major disruptions to train traffic as the next construction phase at Amsterdam Centraal Station begins. March 29 to 31 will see very few to no trains running to, from and via the main station in the Dutch capital.

Limited train traffic at Amsterdam Centraal from March 29

From March 29 to April 23, the second construction phase of Amsterdam Centraal will take place. According to Dutch rail company NS, travellers will feel the largest impact on the first three days of the renovations (March 29-31).

On Saturday, March 29, there will be no trains running to, from and via the station in Amsterdam, while on March 30 and 31, there will be very limited train traffic. NS will provide replacement transport and diversions for train passengers during this time, and additional staff will be working to aid travellers.

Train disruptions in Amsterdam continue in April

While the last weekend of March will see the worst of the disruptions, travellers can also expect some delays in April. From April 1 to 13, extra services are expected between Utrecht and Amsterdam as the timetable towards Muiderpoort / Weesp will be adjusted.

Fewer trains will also be running between Amsterdam Centraal and Amersfoort and Almere from April 14 to 23. Passengers can use the metro or replacement buses instead. International trains will also be affected during this period, so travellers should keep an eye out for updates.

Amsterdam Centraal renovations to handle more passengers

“To get passengers to their destinations by train, there has been a lot of puzzling over detour routes, deployment of extra colleagues, replacement buses and transfer options to the metro,” said NS regional director Irma Winkenhuis. “The works require a long haul, also for our passengers. They are badly needed to enable future growth in passenger numbers.” The long-term renovations are part of a years-long plan to ensure that Amsterdam Centraal can handle an increase in passengers using public transport.

The second of five phases includes the replacement of tracks 11, 12 and 13 so that platforms can be made wider and longer. The second railway bridge at the Oostertoegang will also be replaced.
