Rain, snow and colder weather on the table for the Netherlands

By Simone Jacobs

The Netherlands is expected to experience colder weather over the next few days, with the possibility of temperatures dropping to freezing point. Rain and wet snow is also predicted across the country, while parts of the Netherlands could see up to three centimetres of snow on Thursday, February 8.

Chance of snow for parts of the Netherlands on Thursday

According to the latest weather forecasts from Weeronline, large amounts of rain will reach the Netherlands on Thursday morning. Cold temperatures of between 3 and 4 degrees celsius in the northern parts of the country, such as Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland, mean wet snow is a high possibility throughout the day and into the evening.

Wet snow doesn't exactly create the winter wonderland that everyone loves, but don’t give up hope just yet. There is about a 25-percent chance that the snow will continue for long enough to create a snowy layer of one to three centimetres.

Wednesday night will also be colder than the mild winter nights that have been experienced in the Netherlands recently. Meteorologists are uncertain about just how cold it will be, but have predicted that many areas will reach freezing temperatures, especially in the northern parts of the country.

Winter weather in the Netherlands to be short-lived

If Thursday does see several centimetres of snow cover, there won’t be much time to enjoy it, as temperatures across the country are expected to rise again from Friday. In the southern half of the Netherlands, spring-like temperatures of up to 14 degrees celsius could be experienced.

The sun is also expected to shine through on Friday and Saturday, which means that these days could be the best chance to enjoy the carnival celebrations in some sunnier weather. Those enjoying the festivities should keep their rain gear handy though, as rain has not been ruled out.
