Post-doc position

Research / Academic

Combined solar photovoltaic-thermal systems (PVT) facilitate simultaneously conversion of solar radiations into electricity and heat. In addition, the integration of PV and thermal collectors can reduce the production and installation costs. This makes it cheaper and more practical for applications that require both electricity and heat, such as building-integration installations. Spectral beam splitting (SBS) is a special type of PVT in which the incoming solar radiation is split into two components: useful for photo electricity and undesirable for photo electricity (is used for heat generation).

The aim of this Post-doc is to develop a novel phase change material to be used as a spectral filter for a PVT. In this way, PCM plays a role as both storage medium and light-to-heat convertor. Because only small amount of nanoparticles are used in this type of filter, this will be a cost-effective SBS method.

You will focus on the material development and testing in a lab scale PVT. You will work in the Thermal Engineering group and Inorganic Materials Science group at the University of Twente.

  • You have obtained a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or Applied Physics.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of fluid mechanics (including multiphase flows) and heat transfer.
  • You are motivated to develop and characterize new materials (by synthesis and/or combining commercial materials).
  • You have acquired some experience in producing nanofluid.
  • Your knowledge about solar energy is an advantage.
  • You have written in-depth or high-profile scientific papers and a strong ability to orally present results.
  • You have strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • You have excellent social and communication skills.
  • You have a creative and critical attitude, combined with perseverance and being flexible.
