It doesn’t happen very often, but every once in a while the northernmost regions of the Netherlands are treated to a real sight: the Northern Lights. On Sunday night, residents in Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe and Gelderland caught a glimpse of this natural phenomenon.

Aurora Borealis visible from the Netherlands

Every year, thousands of people visit the Nordic countries in the hopes of being able to experience the Northern Lights. It isn’t the first time the Northern Lights have made an appearance in the Netherlands - the Aurora Borealis also lit up Dutch skies in 2021, for example - but normally the colours are fairly faint. This weekend, however, conditions were perfect for this magical light show.

Not only were the Northern Lights visible; a powerful solar flare and good weather meant the green and red lights were clearly visible in the night sky on Sunday night - something which is a relatively rare occurrence in the Netherlands, Luckily, those on the Wadden Islands and in the provinces of Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe and Gelderland caught everything on camera.
