Some of the northernmost parts of the Netherlands got a real treat over the weekend, as the magical Northern Lights lit up the sky above Friesland, Terschelling and Schiermonnikoog.

Aurora Borealis lit up the Dutch skies

You might think that to be in with a chance to get a glimpse of the Northern Lights you’d have to travel all the way to Norway or Iceland, but in a very rare and special treat, some residents of the Netherlands saw the sky above their homes come alive with colour on Saturday night.

Thanks to a powerful solar flare (as well as clear skies and favourable weather), some very lucky people on the islands of Terschelling, Schiermonnikoog and the northern areas of Friesland got to see the Northern Lights - or Aurora Borealis - on Saturday night and very early on Sunday morning.

🌌 Fraai #poollicht afgelopen nacht langs de kust van Friesland! We konden het noorderlicht visueel waarnemen en er waren korte tijd zelfs rode 'pilaren' zichtbaar.
