Lack of public toilets in Amsterdam remains a problem

\\n

Access to toilets has long been a problem in Amsterdam and while the city has been adding more toilets during major events, there won’t be more coming. “On peak event days, we’ve reached the practical and spatial limits of how many toilets we can place in the city,” said Alderman of Public Space and Greenery Melanie van der Horst.

The problem mainly affects women, as they cannot use the urinals located throughout the city like men can. Many political parties have urged for a more equal distribution of free public toilets. During Pride Amsterdam in 2025, men had almost three times as many options for toilets compared to women.

A new app called Flushiest has been unveiled in the lead-up to King’s Day. The free app shows users a map of toilets listed by local residents, bars and businesses in Amsterdam that they can pay to use.

Rent available toilets in Amsterdam with new app

If you’ve ever been in the Dutch capital during a major event like King’s Day or Pride, you’ll know the struggle of finding a toilet. While there are apps like HogeNood that lead you to the nearest public restroom, many toilets go unlisted, like those in residents’ houses.

Paolo Bonavera, a South African who now lives in Amsterdam, has found the shortage of public toilets on King’s Day frustrating. “It gets messy. Women, in particular, often cannot find a place to go to the toilet,” Bonavera told Het Parool

Bonavera recently developed a new app called Flushiest, which could solve the problem and hopefully avoid long queues for public toilets. App users can see a live map of the nearest verified toilets on offer from bars, businesses and private residences, with filters for female-only restrooms as well as wheelchair accessibility and baby changing stations. There is also a price filter, ranging from free to over 10 euros.

So how does it work once you’ve selected a toilet? You then pay the toilet owner to use the toilet and receive a QR code as an entry pass to your rented throne. “A kind of Airbnb but for restrooms,” said Bonavera.
