2024 is nearing the end and with it, Google’s Year in Search has been released. Despite the new cabinet coming in and European elections taking place, what everyone was searching on the internet might surprise you. Here’s the top searches in the Netherlands for 2024.

Dutch Google trends in 2024

It was a busy year with a lot happening both in the Netherlands and internationally. The top search for 2024 in the Netherlands was the European Football Championships (EK) in Germany where the Dutch team made it into the semi-finals. There were also several questions about the Euros being typed into the search engine, such as “What time does the Netherlands play?” and “Why is Cucurella being booed?”.

Another popular search topic was Joost Klein, featuring in the top five of several categories. Some of the most common search queries involving the Dutch artist - who participated in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest and was disqualified following an incident with a camerawoman - included questions about when he was performing, what was happening and why he was disqualified from the competition.

The Olympic Games in Paris was also people's minds in the Netherlands, as the third most common search term. Finishing in sixth position overall with a record number of medals, TeamNL made the country proud.

Other notable terms also made an appearance in the top 10 such as recently departed One Direction star Liam Payne, the online shopping platform Temu, the new Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and the first Dutch person to be named world’s best athlete, Sifan Hassan.

Most-googled questions in the Netherlands

It wasn’t all fun and games though, as there were also some serious questions put out into the world such as how to vote in the Netherlands during the European elections. The election results saw three new Dutch parties make their debut in the EU parliament.

With the use of the zombie drug known as flakka rising in the Netherlands this year, it had many people searched to learn more. As a way to prevent the rise, the Dutch government amended a law to ban the substance which was previously legal.

There was also a lot of controversy around fat bikes in 2024. With an increase in accidents involving the vehicles being driven by young people, the Dutch parliament made moves to introduce an age limit and mandatory helmet use for drivers aged under 14. However, while many organisations were worried about the sharp rise in fat bikes, residents were perhaps not so perturbed searching “How much does a fat bike cost?”.
