The I amsterdam sign is coming back to Museumplein
Yes, you heard right - the I amsterdam sign is coming back to Museumplein, only three months after being removed. However, if you want to snap a picture with it you'll need to be quick, as the sign won’t be back for very long.
I amsterdam sign making an appearance
The sign will be brought back to Museumplein on Tuesday, March 19 to promote the Provincial Council elections on Wednesday, March 20. The GroenLinks mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, will even be placing her vote in a voting booth next to it. (A little reminder - GroenLinks was the party who filed the motion to remove the sign!)
Amsterdammers will also be able to place their votes using the voting booth next to the sign. However, the I amsterdam sign isn't back for good - it will be removed again just two days after its reappearance in front of the Rijksmuseum.
Why did the sign leave in the first place?
The sign was removed in December after a motion filed by GroenLinks to Amsterdam City Council received a majority vote. The motion deemed the sign to be individualistic, whereas Amsterdam should instead promote solidarity and diversity.
The other I amsterdam signs can still be seen at Schiphol airport and Sloterplas Lake in Amsterdam West, as well as at certain events in the city.
