As of July 3, major roadworks on the A1 towards Amsterdam have started. Drivers can expect diversions and travel delays of up to an hour until the works are complete on August 17.
A1 roadworks cause delays for Dutch drivers
Anyone driving on the A1 towards Amsterdam will experience traffic disruptions for almost the entire summer. At 11pm on July 3, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) began major roadworks on the motorway that will only be completed at 5am on August 17.
While the maintenance takes place, drivers can expect road diversions, extra traffic measures and additional travel time of between half an hour and an hour, reports NH Nieuws. Rijkswaterstaat is urging road users to travel outside peak hours where possible, to work from home, to carpool, or to travel by public transport. The highway will remain open to traffic travelling away from Amsterdam.
Heavy maintenance kicks off on A1 towards Amsterdam
Rijkswaterstaat has closed the one side of the motorway for maintenance. Asphalt and expansion joints will be replaced, and repairs to the road surface, bridges and viaducts are all part of the planned roadworks.
This will take place in three phases, during which different parts of the motorway will be closed:
- July 3 - July 27: Only exit 5 (Naarden-West) and exit 6 (Naarden-Vesting) will be open. Other on-ramps for the A1 towards Amsterdam are closed.
- July 27 - August 5: The A1 and all on-ramps for the A1 towards Amsterdam will be closed.
- August 5 - August 17: Only exit 5 (Naarden-West) will be open. Other on-ramps for the A1 towards Amsterdam will be closed.
