The major maintenance planned for roads in and around Amsterdam is set to begin on Friday, May 9 and continue for several months. Drivers travelling through the Dutch capital should expect extreme traffic congestion during this period.
On Friday, planned road maintenance will begin on the A1 motorway between Watergraafsmeer and Diemen, kicking off a summer of planned traffic disruptions. From May 9 to October 6 at the earliest, work will also be done on parts of the A10 ring road, the A9 and the A4.
Along with the maintenance, there will also be several large events that will cause further congestion, such as the party on the A10 to celebrate Amsterdam’s 750th birthday and the NATO summit in The Hague. Motorists have been advised to work from home where possible, travel by public transport or by bicycle, carpool or travel during off-peak times, reports NOS.
With a long list of maintenance to be done in and around Amsterdam this year, the municipality of Amsterdam, ProRail and Rijkswaterstaat have teamed up to form the Bereikbaar partnership, coordinating planned disruptions to ensure travellers experience the least inconvenience possible. As renovations and train traffic disruptions at Amsterdam Centraal dissipated at the end of April, travel delays will hit roads around the Dutch capital from May.
The large-scale maintenance work planned for the Dutch city from May to October was announced towards the end of 2024, warning drivers to expect extreme traffic congestion in Amsterdam. The organisations involved even suggested that one in five drivers should leave the roads to prevent hour-long standstills. Road users can find an overview of all the planned works on the Amsterdam Bereikbaar website.
