Following the thunderstorms on Tuesday, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued another code yellow weather warning for many parts of the Netherlands. Prolonged rain and heavy thunderstorms are expected from Friday afternoon until Saturday morning.

Weather warning for heavy rain in the south of the Netherlands

A code yellow weather warning has been issued by the KNMI for most regions of the Netherlands, lasting from 2pm on Friday, May 24 until 12am on Saturday, May 25. In the south and southeast regions of the country, there will be prolonged rain until Saturday morning.

Flooding is also possible, especially in the south of Limburg, with up to 40 millimetres of rain expected to fall in just 24 hours. The heavy rain is expected to end by around 8am on Saturday, but there may still be a few soft showers throughout the day.

Thunderstorms and hail expected in the north

While Friday morning starts out with sunny weather, the afternoon will see a change with heavy thunderstorms, especially in the northern parts of the country. Along with copious amounts of precipitation in a short amount of time, there is also a chance of hail.

A traffic warning comes with the rainy Dutch weather, as roads and tunnels could become flooded, so drivers should remain cautious. Outdoor activities, such as festivals, could also face disruptions.
