Following the first tropically warm day of the year, heavy thunderstorms, winds and even hail are set to hit the Netherlands. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow weather warning for parts of the country on Friday night.
While Dutch residents can enjoy a hot day with temperatures reaching 32 degrees celsius on Friday, the weather will take a turn as we head into the evening. Heavy thunderstorms will roll in during the night, bringing strong winds, heavy rains and hail.
From 11pm on Friday, June 13 to 3am on Saturday, June 14, a weather warning is in place for Zuid-Holland, Noord-Brabant and Zeeland. More than 30 millimetres of rainfall per hour is expected and wind gusts could reach up to 75 kilometres per hour. KNMI also predicts that hailstones of up to 2 centimetres could fall.
Events taking place outdoors may be affected by the stormy weather and there could be some local flooding. The heavy rain showers should move north and will slowly dissipate as we head into Saturday.
A few rain showers and thunderstorms are possible throughout the Netherlands on Saturday, with temperatures set to remain between 28 and 32 degrees celsius. On Sunday, temperatures will cool, and it will be a pleasant sunny day to enjoy outside for Father’s Day.
The new week will bring calm and dry summer weather with loads of sunshine - perfect to explore a national park or lounge on the beach. Weeronline forecasts normal temperatures for this time of year, with the mercury rising to up to 26 degrees celsius daily.
