EP Nuffic, an organisation promoting internationalisation in education, announced last week that applications for the 2017-2018 academic year are now open for the Holland Scholarship.

This funding scheme, established in 2014, is designed to increase university student mobility to the Netherlands from outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

Funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and in collaboration with the majority of universities and hogescholen in the Netherlands, students can now apply for a scholarship to go towards their study costs.

The Holland Scholarship Initiative

The scholarship initiative focuses on promoting higher education in the Netherlands in a competitive global educational market.

It was first launched in June of 2014, as part of the Vision on Internationalisation, set out by the VSNU (the Association of Universities in the Netherlands), Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences, and the Ministry of Education, Cultural and Science.

A total of 1.536 scholarships are granted to students each year.

A scholarship for non-EEA students

The scholarship is meant for students of outstanding academic achievement from outside the EEA who are applying to do a Bachelor’s or Master’s at participating universities in the field of research or applied sciences.

Eligible students will be awarded a one-off payment of 5.000 euros in the first year of their studies by the institution.

Application requirements

Here are the three requirements:
› Non-EEA nationality
› Do not yet have a degree from institution in the Netherlands
› Receive an offer letter from one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions

Partial Scholarships for Dutch students

Similarly, Dutch students currently attending a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at one of the participating universities, may also apply for the scholarship.

These grants will have a value of 1.250 euros to go towards a short exchange programme outside of the EEA.

How to apply

Depending on the start date of your chosen programme, the deadline for applications will either be on February 1 or May 1, 2017.

Students are expected to apply directly to the institution that offers the programme they are interested in. For more information, please check the Holland Scholarship website.
