Scheveningen is the most popular beach in the Netherlands

The Scheveningen beach resort received 27 percent of the votes in a poll, by Blauw Research, to discover the Netherlands' favourite beach.

The resort is so popular that it polled almost twice as many votes as its nearest rival, the Zeeland coast, which came second at 14 percent.

There were several factors that were used to determine a beach's popularity. They were principally; cleanliness, the atmosphere, the variety in the types of activities and accessibility. Respondents remarked that Scheveningen had a pretty beach, festive atmosphere and was easy to get to.

Many of the events and attractions at Scheveningen are well known in the Netherlands. Of the respondents, the vast majority had heard about the Madurodam (70 percent) and the Pier (69 percent), and a considerable proportion knew about the Circustheater (40 percent) and the SEA LIFE centre (36 percent).

However, by far the best feature of Scheveningen is provided by nature. Its large and smooth beach is a big hit with the Dutch.

Scheveningen should not get too comfortable however; there is room for improvement. Young people said that they would like to see more events and sporting facilities in Scheveningen, while some respondents complained that it was too busy.
