Dutch ice cream parlours boom as flavours get weirder

There’s nothing quite like having a delicious scoop - or two - of ice cream to cool down on a hot summer’s day. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to find a spot to grab a scoop, as there has been a significant increase in the number of ice cream parlours in the Netherlands in recent years.

More ice cream shops across the Netherlands

Based on figures from the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) cited by AD, there are significantly more ice cream shops in the Netherlands than there were 10 years ago. This year, there are at least 984 artisanal ice cream parlours, up from the 677 counted in 2016 - an increase of 45 percent. 

The Dutch province that has the most ice cream locations is South Holland, with 190 shops where you can purchase a scoop. North Holland follows close behind with 184 ice cream parlours, and North Brabant with 125.

While provinces like Flevoland, Zeeland and Groningen might not have nearly as many ice cream spots, they have seen a major spike in the last decade. The most notable is in Flevoland, which saw an increase of over 211 percent, going from just nine ice cream parlours to 28.

Ice cream flavour options also grow

"The number of ice cream shops just keeps growing," food trend watcher Gijsbregt Brouwer told AD. "That fits in with the trend of coffee shops and bakeries. People are creating affordable and small moments of luxury for themselves during the day."

Not only are there more ice cream shops, but the flavours on offer are also more diverse. Salty and umami flavours are becoming more popular, especially at more upscale establishments. Of course, sweet and sour flavours are still the go-to as children, known lovers of ice cream, typically prefer the usual favourites. 

“Flavours like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry will always remain popular," says Brouwer. "But gradually, I think we will start seeing salt and umami more often. In Utrecht, for example, they sell herring ice cream. And according to many people, that is very tasty!" Soft serve is also an up-and-comer, with unique toppings adding some excitement. “Think of olive oil, Maldon salt, or even some caviar. That looks great on TikTok and Instagram, of course."
