Frosty winter weather is expected in the Netherlands this week, as temperatures are set to plummet to as low as -10 degrees celsius in some parts of the country. The freezing temperatures won’t last long though, as warmer temperatures will arrive from Wednesday.

Cold start to the week in the Netherlands

Monday will have a frosty start to the day with icy conditions expected, causing some inconvenience on Dutch roads. The mercury won’t rise much throughout the day with temperatures no higher than 5 degrees celsius forecast for most of the Netherlands, reported Weeronline.

The southeastern parts of the country could see temperatures rise to around 2 degrees celsius, but freezing conditions will likely remain for the entire day, especially in Dutch cities such as Maastricht. On the positive side, the sun will be shining brightly, with only a little fog and mist falling over the east and southeast.

According to Buienradar, as we head into the evening and into Tuesday, temperatures will take a further dive to as low as -10 degrees celsius in South Limburg due to the remaining snow cover. Northern and western cities such as Amsterdam and The Hague will see temperatures just above freezing, while inland cities such as Enschede and Eindhoven can expect freezing temperatures during the night time.

Dutch weather warms up mid-week

The freezing temperatures will give way to warmer weather as Wednesday approaches. The mercury will rise to a maximum of between 4 and 8 degrees celsius across the Netherlands, with fog and small bouts of rain turning the day grey.

Weeronline predicts that the rest of the week will be mostly dry with the sun shining periodically and temperatures continuously hitting maximums of 8 degrees.

Longest period in the Netherlands without ice day

With the frosty temperatures not lasting long, the record for the longest period without an ice day in the Netherlands has recently been broken. An ice day occurs when temperatures remain at or below freezing point in De Bilt for 24 hours.

The previous record was 755 days between 1974 and 1976. This record was broken on January 11, 2025 as the Netherlands reached 756 days without an ice day. The last time a full day with freezing temperatures was measured in De Bilt was on December 17, 2022. As warmer days head our way, the period without an ice day will continue.
