The total productivity of the hospitals in the Netherlands grew by 14,7 percent (2003-2009), according to the Centre for Innovation and Public Sector Efficiency Studies of TU Delft.
Productivity growth
› nursing staff (34,9 percent)
› medical personnel (14,5 percent)
› management and staff (12,4 percent)
› other personnel (10,1 percent)
Disadventages of scale
At the same time, increase in scale led to partial negation of the productivity growth; 1 percent expansion of production equals 1,23 percent extra costs. "The policy should be focused on stopping a further increase in scale through a ban on mergers and facilitating the entry of new suppliers, for example," says director of IPSE Studies Jos Blank.
