Code Yellow: First storm of 2024 set to hit the Netherlands tonight

The Netherlands is set to face its first storm of 2024 as Storm Henk rolls in over the country tonight. Strong winds and a Code Yellow weather warning are expected to last until Wednesday morning.

Storm Henk set to batter the Dutch coast

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is predicting the storm will hit the west coast of the Netherlands the hardest. The agency has issued a Code Yellow alert for wind in almost every province except Noord-Brabant, Limburg and Gelderland.

The weather agency has said it expects the winds to start to decrease by Wednesday morning and therefore has placed the weather advisory between 8pm on Tuesday night to 4am on Wednesday morning, but for the most up-to-date information it is important to check their website.

Possible disruption to traffic and public transport

One of the key concerns for weather experts is the impact of the strong winds on travel and transportation. According to the KNMI, “traffic and outdoor activities may be affected by the wind.” So far, no major delays or cancellations have been announced at Dutch airports due to the weather, but check with your airline for the most accurate information.

The weather agency advises people in strong winds to be aware of falling trees, branches, roof tiles and other flying objects that could cause injury if carried by the wind. They also recommend tuning in to traffic updates if you plan on driving during the storm, and securing loose items such as garden chairs or waste containers so that they do not cause damage to people or property.
