The Netherlands has 6th fastest Internet connection in the world

The Netherlands has the sixth fastest Internet connection speed in the world, according to the Akamai State of the Internet Report.

Average connection speed in the Netherlands

The average connection speed in the Netherlands was revealed to be 8,6 Mbps, marginally slower than its closest European contenders Switzerland and Latvia (at 8,7 and 8,9 Mbps respectively).

The top three spots are occupied by Asian nations with South Korea registering the quickest average connection speed at 14,0 Mbps, followed by Japan and Hong Kong at 10,8 and 9,3 Mbps respectively.

DDoS Attacks

The report also delved into statistics surrounding Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. DigiD, the electronic identification service favoured by the Dutch government, was recently a victim of such an attack.

A 200 percent increase in reports of DDoS attacks since 2011 was revealed, totalling 768 in 2012, although only 9 percent of these attacks were directed towards public sector agencies.

The digitalised Dutch

This latest ranking is another good example of how the Netherlands is embracing Internet technologies with open arms.

Last year the country was revealed to have been the European leader in household Internet access and this latest Akamai report has shown that broadband adoption rates in the Netherlands are the highest in Europe by a considerable distance, at 21,61 percent.
