The most popular dog name of 2023 in the Netherlands has been revealed, and the winner is... Luna! For a long time, Luna has been one of the most popular names for Dutch dogs, until last year when it was overtaken by Max. But Luna’s crown has now been returned.

Pet insurance firm Figo asked 62.000 dog owners for their pet’s name

The most popular dog names in the Netherlands were revealed by pet insurance firm Figo, who asked 62.000 dog owners about their dogs’ names, to put together the top 10 most popular names, as well as looking at some unusual and funny dog names.

In 2023, the number of funny and unusual dog names was as good as ever, with some of the best being “Maurice de Hond”, “Mootje”, “Pad Thai” and “Dumpling”. Some even more hilarious dog names found by Figo include “Stinky”, “Wifi” and “Winston Furchill”.

Pet insurance firm warns against leaving your pets uninsured

As part of a press release, the firm behind the ranking gave some statistics on pet insurance in the Netherlands, and explained that while many people across the country see their pets as part of their family, less than 5 percent of puppy owners insure their furry friends.

For pets in the Netherlands, insurance is not mandatory, however since vet bills can be quite expensive, many owners choose to purchase it. Dog tax, on the other hand, is required, and can cost between 60 and 150 euros per year depending on the municipality in which you live.
