Totally paw-some: These were the most popular dog names in 2022

By Victoria Séveno

It’s the 2022 round-up you’ve all been waiting for: the most popular dog names in the Netherlands. From Bella to Ollie - these were the names pet owners loved the most last year.

What names do Dutch people choose for their pets?

Anyone with a pet knows they’re not just an animal; they’re part of the family. So it’s perhaps unsurprising that Petplan, an insurance company for pets, has put together a list of the 101 most popular dog names in the Netherlands in 2022.

On the whole, Petplan found that names plucked from famous cartoons and children’s films proved popular in 2022, with some of the most common Hollywood-inspired names including Stitch, Sima, and Mowgli from the classic Disney films.

Alongside their picks for the most popular names for pooches, the company also spotlights some especially funny and unusual names that popped up in 2022. Some of the highlights include:

  • Booty
  • Falafel
  • Vamos A La Playa
  • Shakira
  • Ghostbuster
  • Biertje
  • Gucci

Max knocks Luna off the top spot in 2022

While for years Luna has managed to hold onto its spot at the top of the list of popular dog names, this year Max managed to pip it to the post - perhaps because of Max Verstappen’s recent successes on the Formula 1 circuit?

Last year, the most popular names for dogs in the Netherlands were:

  1. Max
  2. Luna
  3. Pip
  4. Bella
  5. Bo
  6. Charlie
  7. Teddy
  8. Ollie
  9. Guus
  10. Bailey

Want to know if you’re four-legged friend’s name made the list? Check out Petplan’s website to see all 101 names that made the cut.
