The streaming site Netflix has become a staple in many homes and families, offering easily accessible entertainment for those of all ages, all around the world. This week though, the company had some bad news for its users in the Netherlands, announcing that prices for both the standard and premium subscriptions were being increased.

Netflix hikes up prices for standard and premium subscriptions

Netflix is extremely popular around the world, thanks to the wealth of films and TV shows the platform offers for a fairly reasonable monthly price, but news from the streaming service reveals it’s hiking up its prices in the Netherlands for the first time in four years.

Effective immediately, the Netflix standard subscription, which offers users HD image quality and use of up to two screens at a time, will be increased from 10,99 euros to 13,99 euros per month. Meanwhile, the premium subscription, which offers Ultra HD (4K) image quality and use of up to four screens at a time, will be increased from 13,99 euros to 15,99 euros per month.

Higher prices also apply to existing users in the Netherlands

The changes mean that existing users will be required to pay the new, higher prices from their next invoice, which could take up to two months depending on the invoice date. Netflix says the higher prices are necessary in order to accommodate for its “investment in new series and movies and the improvements to our product.”

All users will receive an email informing them of the higher prices. The price of the basic subscription will remain 7,99 euros a month for the time being, “so that everyone can continue to enjoy our service,” Netflix said.
