As the year winds to a close, we look back on some of the highlights of 2021. According to this year’s edition of the ever-popular Spotify Wrapped, five of the top 10 most popular artists were Dutch, with Blijven slapen by Maan en Snelle named the number one song of the year.
Every year, streaming platform Spotify delights its users with a list of their favourite songs and artists from the past 12 months, outlining their listening habits over the last year and putting together a playlist of their most listened to tracks.
While these playlists are unique by nature, there are a handful of songs and artists that are lucky to feature regularly across various playlists. Here in the Netherlands, Dutch-language music proved particularly popular amongst listeners, and three of the top 10 most streamed songs are by Dutch artists.
"The Netherlands is really at the forefront when it comes to listening to streaming music and very good music is also made in the Netherlands," said Spotify Benelux boss Wilbert Mutsaers, who was pleased to see Dutch music feature so prominently in the 2021 review.
Like last year, Dutch rappers dominate the list of the top five male artists in the Netherland, with Justin Bieber being the only international artist to make the list:
