For many people across the globe, Spotify Wrapped day is one of the highlights of the year (kind of). But aside from just providing listeners with a rundown of their listening habits and their number one tracks and artists from the past year, it also offers a little insight into the listening habits and music preferences of different countries.
According to this year’s Wrapped, one Dutch singer achieved the rather impressive feat of being named the most listened-to artist in the Netherlands, while Vluchtstrook was revealed as the number-one hit of 2022.
Similarly to last year, Dutch-language music proved particularly popular here in the Netherlands, with various Dutch acts nabbing spots in the top five lists of songs and artists. In fact, 20-year-old Antoon from Hoorn managed to beat out a number of international stars to be named the most popular artist of the year.
In fact, the top song of the year, Kris Kross Amsterdam’s Vluchtstrook, also featured Antoon and Sigourney K. Overall, Spotify users in the Netherlands do appear to be extremely fond of local artists and Dutch music, with 11 out of the top 20 artists in 2022 actually coming from the Netherlands.
Another noteworthy aspect of this year’s Wrapped is the appearance of a song from 1985 in the 10th spot. Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill experienced a real renaissance this year after it was featured in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, pushing it back into the charts and making it one of the biggest songs of the year.
Male artists dominate the top five list in the Netherlands, according to Spotify:
Six of the top 10 most popular songs in the Netherlands in 2022 were released by Dutch artists:
