It’s that time again: the most popular dog names in the Netherlands have been revealed. From Teddy to Nala, these were the tail-wagging favourites for paw-rents in 2024.

Dutch remain loyal to classic names for their pooches

After asking 67.000 dog owners in the Netherlands for their pups’ names, pet insurance company Figo has compiled a list of the most popular titles, as well as some of the most unusual and funny ones.

Last year, Luna returned as the number one dog name in the country and remains top dog for 2024. Some of the most unique names this year include “Ture Peppe Be Forever The Greatest”, “Tracker”, “Topo Fluffybutt” and “Schnitzel von Krumm”. If you want to have a little giggle, there are certainly some funny names this year too with “Trumpie”, “Yamas” and “Slipper”.

Less than 5 percent of dogs in the Netherlands are insured

In its yearly press release, the firm behind the ranking gave some statistics on pet insurance in the Netherlands, and explained that while many people across the country see their pets as part of their family, less than 5 percent of puppy owners insure their furry friends.

While insurance is not mandatory for pets in the Netherlands, vet bills can be quite expensive, which is why many owners choose to purchase it anyway. Dog tax, on the other hand, is required, and can cost between 60 and 150 euros per year depending on which municipality you live in.

  6. Charlie
