The Simplicity of Complexity

This talk is about the fact that we live in a universe of complex systems.

Our world is made of seven billion individual people who live and work together, the same way a biological cell is made of thousands of different molecules that cooperate in order to function. Understanding this complexity is one of the most challenging scientific strands of the present day.

This talk will examine the collective behaviour of thousands of human beings, the immune system and criminal networks – all of which emerge from the same source and follow the same rules of nature.

A science talk in English

As the talk is in English, it couldn't be more perfect for expats and internationals in Amsterdam who are curious about scientific conundrums of our time. The event is semi-seated and visitors are welcome from 7.30pm.

The timetable of December 11 will be as follows:

• 8.30pm: Talk (in English) by Peter Sloot "The Simplicity of Complexity"

About Peter Sloot

Peter Sloot is a professor in computational science at the University of Amsterdam, professor of advanced computing at ITMO St. Petersburg and director of the Complexity Institute in Singapore and scientific director of the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Amsterdam.

Science & Cocktails - bringing science to the people

This concept has proven extremely successful for over a decade in cities across the world like Copenhagen, Johannesburg and Brussels. Now, for its first Amsterdam season, you can enjoy the fourth talk of the Amsterdam Science & Cocktails, which aims to make scientific knowledge accessibly to everybody as a service to the community.
