Darkness Into Light sunrise charity event

Walk, run, cycle, swim or row for mental health awareness! Darkness Into Light is a global event, to promote positive mental health. The yearly event helps raise funds and awareness regarding suicide prevention.

Would you like to take part in a long-distance sponsored walk, run, swim - or whatever mode you prefer - on May 8, 2021? Then, get ready to set off at the break of dawn, for a great cause.

Take part and support suicide prevention this spring

All donations raised will go to the Dutch organisation 113 Zelfmoordpreventie to help deliver vital programmes and support services across the Netherlands. The coronavirus pandemic has taken a massive toll on mental health, and therefore this event, and the donations raised by participants, are more welcome and necessary than ever.

Darkness Into Light has grown from a 5km walk by 500 participants at Phoenix Park in Dublin to a global movement with international partners in five continents, with supporters helping to raise over 29 million euros for mental health charities to date. Funds raised contribute to keeping the free telephone helplines open and pay for therapy and counselling.

Participants will be sent the iconic Darkness Into Light t-shirts and are encouraged to share photographs and videos of their fundraising endeavours on social media, using the hashtag #DIL2021.

Darkness Into Light donations

Here's what your donations can do to help:

  • 20 euros: help the therapists answer two phone calls from those seeking help
  • 45 euros: help fund a crisis counselling session that someone may need between previously scheduled sessions
  • 90 euros: help fund the first dedicated therapy session for someone in need
  • 500 euros: help fund a bereavement liaison officer supporting a family in their home

Safety during Darkness Into Light

In a usual year, those taking part would gather as a large group, showing solidarity as they walk together, as well as safety in numbers. This year, with coronavirus measures in place, event can be undertaken at any location and by any mode - whether on foot, by bike or event by rowing boat - that suits the participants, so that a socially distanced event can take place.

Darkness Into Light, as an organisation, expressly requests that all participants take safety and weather precautions into consideration and to abide by the coronavirus measures. Participants are urged to carry out their Darkness Into Light journey in an area that is well lit and, if rowing or cycling, to ensure all equipment is in good condition. The organisation keeps in mind the national curfew and therefore it starts at 4.45am.
