Arcen will transform into a 19th-century English town during the Scrooge Festival, as Charles Dickens’ famous seasonal story A Christmas Carol comes to life!

Meet the characters from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol

The immensely popular Scrooge Festival in Arcen will be visited by characters from A Christmas Carol, the famous novella by Charles Dickens. The village, situated in the southern province of Limburg, leaves our modern world behind for this heart-warming celebration of literature, theatrical displays, top-notch costumes and Christmas vibes.

Meet Ebenezer Scrooge, Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchitt and his son Tiny Tim, the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, Christmas carol singers, a hard-working grave digger, street urchins and noblemen - you name it, they’ll be there with so many other characters from Charles Dickens' illustrious imagination!

Market stalls, street performances and a dose of good old-fashioned Christmas spirit will make the Dickens Festival an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. The streets are beautifully decorated to convey a Christmas time of yore. Charles Dickens’ London sets the scene with real live geese, pigs and chickens. 

Christmas festivities in the south of the Netherlands

Scrooge Festival takes place in Arcen, which is located on the River Meuse (Maas) in Limburg in the south of the Netherlands. The nearest Dutch cities are Venlo, Roermond, Maastricht and Eindhoven. Being close to the Dutch-German border, this event is also very popular with expats in Germany.

Other Christmas-related events taking place in the province of Limburg include Valkenburg Christmas Market and Magical Maastricht. In another part of the country, namely in Deventer, the Dickens Festival takes place the same weekend as Scrooge Festival.

Plan your visit to Scrooge Festival

Scrooge Festival takes place on Saturday, December 11, from 12pm-8pm and on Sunday, December 12, from 11am-6pm. Get dressed up as a character from A Christmas Carol and enjoy the festive cheer! Visitors are urged to leave their pets at home, as farm animals are part of the spectacle.
