'Smart' traffic lights to be installed in The Hague

By James Shaw

Over the next two years, the Municipality of The Hague will try to replace existing traffic lights with "smart" traffic lights, and remove them altogether where possible.

"Smart" traffic lights, which turn green or red depending upon the number of cars, are already in use in The Hague. In 2011, network control systems were installed, which continuously calculate the most optimal flow of traffic.

Motorists get a green light most of the time. For example, motorists have now gained a minute on average on a 2-kilometre stretch of the Lozerlaan in the direction of Loosduinen during the evening rush hour.

To improve the accessibility of the city and to improve traffic, signs with dynamic route information have been placed on the Centrumring and on main routes. These boards can report changes in traffic, such as traffic jams in the event of an accident, or detours because of road work or events.

This network with dynamic route guidance information will be extended to Scheveningen in 2012. People driving to Scheveningen will immediately be able to see how long their journey will be, and it is hoped that journey times will be cut.
