Amsterdam's Schiphol airport has been named the best airport in Europe for the second year running at the Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Geneva.

Breaking into the top 3

Not only has Schiphol held onto the position it was awarded at last years awards, it has also broken into the top three airports in the world, ending the six-year grip which Asian airports held over the spots. Schiphol was also given a similar accolade late last year by a different organisation.

Skytrax, who ran this particular survey, stated that "The easy airside transfer process continues to be a popular reason for many passenger votes. Schiphol alongside KLM has developed and implemented an effective self-service transfer process and this has resulted in significant improvements in passenger feedback."

The efficiency and good staff service are also mentioned as weapons with which the Amsterdam airport was able to stage its assault on one of the spots in the top three airports in the world. Executive Vice President & CCO Maarten de Groof, in the wake of the ceremony, asserted that "Passenger comfort and ensuring a travel process that's efficient and reliable are priorities at Schiphol."

Top 5 airports in the world

1. Singapore Changi Airport
2. Incheon International Airport
3. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
4. Hong Kong International Airport
5. Beijing Capital International Airport

About the survey

The Skytrax survey, from which the World Airport Awards derive their legitimacy, is conducted across a nine month period, taking in 12,1 million questionnaires in 395 airports worldwide. Travellers evaluate their experiences across 39 different performance indicators.

This wide scope has made the awards, also known as the Passenger's Choice Awards, the most significant benchmark for measuring the quality of airports worldwide.
