The city of The Hague is planning to invest 15,5 million euros in upgrading the traffic infrastructure, including the installation of remote control traffic lights.

Reducing congestion

The project will include the adaptation of 100 traffic lights on the main roads around The Hague so that they can be controlled by the municipality's traffic control centre.

Alderman for transport issues Peter Smit believes that the real-time information provided for by the remote control lights "should make traffic move more efficiently and reduce congestion at traffic lights."

Traffic data

Further to the remote control lights the municipality will upgrade 40 outdated traffic lights and place a special device on 200 others which will record the amount of the traffic passing through.

This data will then be used to predict the patterns of transport in the city in order to produce better traffic management in the long-run. The project will be completed by 2014.
