Rich people in the Netherlands appear to keep on getting richer: According to new figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), in 2020, the number of Dutch millionaires has risen for the sixth consecutive year.
Almost 300.000 millionaires in the Netherlands
As of January 1, 2020, a whopping 278.000 households in the Netherlands had assets of at least one million euros - an increase of more than 24.000 households compared to 2019. Since 2014, the number of millionaires has been steadily rising. CBS attributes this increase to rising house and stock prices.
Of these households, 64,1 percent had assets of between one and two million, while 2,9 percent had assets worth at least 10 million euros - the proportion that falls into this bracket has increased gradually over the past few years. The municipalities with the highest percentage of millionaires are - unsurprisingly - Bloemendaal and Laren, while North Holland is the province with the most millionaire households.
Rich households have an average wealth of 1,6 million
While the wealth of the average family in 2020 was 56.000 euros, millionaire families had an average wealth of 1,6 million euros. Most of this wealth consisted of substantial interest and business capital (45 percent), while only 21 percent consisted of the value of their own home.
Statisticians do, however, take the fluctuating value of money into account, and note that one million euros in 2008 could get you a lot more than it could in 2020. With this in mind, relatively speaking, the number of households with assets worth at least one million euros has only risen by around 35.000 since 2008.
