Following the collapse of the cabinet last Friday, the Dutch government has confirmed that the next general election will take place on Wednesday, November 22.

The Netherlands to go to the polls on November 22

After conversations between cabinet ministers over the national asylum policy broke down last week, Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced the official resignation of himself and his cabinet. This means the Netherlands must head to the polls once again in order to vote for their representatives in the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) and select a new Prime Minister.

It was already clear that the elections would not take place until the autumn, but in a statement on Friday afternoon, the government officially announced November 22 as the date of the general election. The date has been selected in order to account for the "preparation time [needed by] political parties, the feasibility for municipalities and the preparations by the Electoral Council," the government explained.
