The most popular baby names in the Netherlands in 2018

By Manja van Kesteren
Jan 30, 2019

Is your name Lucas or Julia? Well, you are definitely not alone. It turns out that these names were last year’s most popular baby names in the Netherlands, according to social security bank SVB (Sociale Verzekeringsbank).

The most popular baby names

In 2018, an estimated 169.134 babies were born; 86.631 boys and 82.503 girls. Of those babies, 681 boys were named Lucas and 797 girls were named Julia, making them the most popular baby names of 2018. Both names were favourites in 2017 as well, with Lucas coming in third and Julia coming in fourth.

Differences per region

This year, the regional differences are quite remarkable. For instance, national favourite Lucas did not make the top 10 in Noord-Brabant, Drenthe, Overijssel or Groningen, whilst the name Lieke did not make the national top 10 but is the most chosen name for girls in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe.

Another name that stands out is Jan, which was the most popular name for boys in Zeeland in 2018. However, on the national list, Jan comes in at number 27!
