Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has reported that airports in the Netherlands saw an increase in airline passengers in the second quarter of 2024. More than 20 million people travelled to and from the five Dutch airports of national importance during this period.
Most flights and passengers travel through Schiphol Airport
From April to June of 2024, 20,1 million passengers travelled through the five major airports in the Netherlands. This is a 6 percent increase from the 19 million passengers in the same period last year.
Most of the travellers went through Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, with 87 percent of all flights and passengers to and from the Netherlands going through the main international airport of the country. In just this airport alone, there were 122.000 flights in Q2 and 17,4 million passengers - both 6 percent more than a year before.
Increase in plane traffic at Dutch airports
Other than Schiphol, three more Dutch airports saw an increase in fliers in the second quarter. Rotterdam The Hague Airport experienced a 1,4 percent increase to 633.000 passengers, despite having fewer flights.
At Maastricht Aachen Airport, travellers went up from 19.000 in Q2 of 2023 to 67.000 in the same period this year, recovering its numbers from before the runway closure last year. The number of flights during those three months also almost quadrupled compared to a year earlier. Only Airport Eelde in Groningen saw virtually no change in the number of passengers.
Airports in the Netherlands also saw an increase in the volume of air freight. Airports handled 7,1 percent more air freight, coming to a total of 372.000 tonnes, with 97 percent going through Schiphol.
