Wintry weather to hit the Netherlands this week

By Abi Carter

After a mild few days, a cold snap is heading to the Netherlands, bringing wintry weather and even the chance of some (wet) snow.

(Wet) snow heading for the Netherlands

The temperature in the Netherlands looks set to drop rapidly between Monday, November 18 and Wednesday, November 20. Maximum temperatures will fall from around 8 degrees celsius to a chilly 5 degrees - way below the average temperature for this time of year - in a cold snap that is expected to last until the weekend.

According to the KNMI, this week will be characterised by very changeable weather, with occasional precipitation that may fall as sleet, wet snow or snow in some areas. We’re also set to see some frosty nights as the temperature falls to an icy minimum of between 1 and 0 degrees.

This week will be wet, cold and windy

Weeronline reports that the weather will rapidly change on Tuesday, likely bringing icy roads and wet snow. “If it snows hard enough, it could even turn white in some regions”, the website writes. Cities such as Utrecht and Nijmegen, and many northern regions of the Netherlands, will probably see their first snowflakes of this winter season. Snow can be hard to predict, but if enough falls, it could start to settle in some areas.

Tuesday will also bring strong winds along with the cold and wet weather, making it tough for anyone braving the conditions on their bikes. By the evening, strong wind gusts of up to 75 kilometres per hour are possible in the southwestern and coastal regions of the Netherlands.

The temperature won’t climb above five degrees anywhere in the country between now and Sunday, according to the KNMI. Make sure you wrap up warm this week!
