18.000 victims due to weather

From November 28 to December 31, 18.000 people in the Netherlands had to go to the emergency room after accidents caused by weather.

According to the Consumer Safety Institute (Consument en Veiligheid), in 70 percent of all accidents, victims were walking, cycling or driving (motorcycle or moped), while 14 percent of them had to be hospitalised.

Note that compared to the same period last year, the percentage of accidents of cyclists and moped riders has fallen to 14 percent from 25 percent.

Costs for medical treatment rose to approximately 50 million euros
Almost half of the patients were 55 years old or more
60 percent of all accidents led to fractures
15 percent of all incidents took place around the house or in the garden
 No death accidents were reported
