You will build and chair a new research unit in the Mechanical Engineering field with a focus on process design of energy systems and conversions. Examples of research topics (but not limited to) can be found in the fields of advanced energy carrier technologies and energy conversion devices such as fuel cells, hydrogen storage systems, hybrid transportation and power systems, as well as "smart" ways of accomplishing chemical-to-work energy conversions.

As Chair of the new group, you will oversee Associate and Assistant Professors and researchers affiliated with the basic unit in their teaching and research. You will acquire funding for research, in particular by bringing in new PhD students, and develop new research collaborations and new application areas.

In addition, you will lecture, supervise research projects and practical courses in the Master Mechanical Engineering education, and will take a leading role in further developing this new curriculum. You will also teach in other educational programs such as the Bachelor and Master’s degree programs in Industrial Management and Engineering and/or Chemical Engineering, particularly in the field of process design. You will act as the supervisor of PhD students, who are embedded in the Groningen Graduate School of Science and Engineering. You are expected to have an active interest in and provide a positive contribution to the management and organizational tasks of the institute.


You have:
· a PhD degree in a relevant field such as mechanical engineering or chemical engineering;
· experienced knowledge of developments in the mentioned research field;
· experience in leading a research group, and shown capabilities in stimulating junior researchers and successfully supervising PhD students;
· a relevant international network and a consistent record in securing research funding;
· teaching and organizational experience appropriate to your career stage;
· excellent academic writing and presentation skills (in English);
· affinity with research at the interface of academia and industry, and with working in multidisciplinary teams.

You are:
· an internationally recognized top-level researcher, demonstrated through publications in top-ranked journals and with leading academic publishers;
· a team player with good communications skills;
· prepared to fulfil the requirements for the University Teaching Qualification;
· willing to learn the Dutch language.

Salary Benefits:

The appointment of Full Professor will be a tenured appointment. The gross monthly salary, dependent on qualifications and work experience, will be from €5,441 up to a maximum of €7,921 for a full-time position. In addition to the primary salary the University offers 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3%.
