Constant Nieuwenhuis

Constant Nieuwenhuis (1920 - 2005) was a leading member of the Cobra group but is equally famous for his intriguing New Babylon project.

After witnessing the reconstruction and changes of Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War, Constant started creating architectural models, maps, drawings, films and more to show what the world might become in the future.

He laboured for 20 years on what was to become one of the largest and most visionary art projects in post-war history.

New Babylon

Constant believed that the society of the future would produce New Babylon, a world in which people were free to exercise personal creativity and to travel at will.

Above the existing cities, new environments would be created where everyone could move around as they wished. The world would be ever-changing, depending on the needs of its inhabitants. New Babylon remains, perhaps more than ever in today’s society, a source of inspiration for many people.

Playful Stairs

A highlight of the New Babylon exhibition is the "Playful Staircase" (Ludieke Trap), a full-sized contraption you can admire and even climb once a month in Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag has a collection of no fewer than 150.000 items, making it one of the largest art museums in the Netherlands. It is housed in one of the most beautiful buildings in The Hague - an art deco masterpiece designed by architect H.P. Berlage. The museum is an enchanting building in which you can literally lose yourself among artists such as Piet Mondrian, as well as Vincent van Gogh, Jan Toorop and Leo van Gestel.
