Hamlet reimagined in Amsterdam

A treat for Dutch audiences, the Copenhagen-based Theater Republique and British cult band The Tiger Lillies will be bringing their contemporary rendition of the Shakespearean classic Hamlet to the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam!

A tale of revenge, betrayal and near insanity, the plot revolves around Prince Hamlet and his return home to avenge the murder of his father after seeing his apparition. However, Hamlet faces a dilemma in that the man he must kill is his father's brother Claudius who has just married his mother, Gertrude. 

Amid plot twists and problems will his own love Ophelia, the end is one of unfathomable tragedy.  Under the direction of Martin Tulinius, the plot remains the same, but the dialogue has been stripped down and transformed into macabre songs performed by The Tiger Lillies.

Wondrous sets of Theater Republique

In addition to live musical accompaniment, Tulinius implements his trademark elaborate set designs. Including aerial suspensions, multimedia screens and ever changing elements, the stage serves to immerse audiences in the turbulent world of Hamlet.  A reflection of the psychosis taking place within the mind of the protagonist, the mix of emotions is literally writ-large in the physicality of the performance and set. Don't miss the chance to see what critics have been raving about when sound, images, set and music unite to stage Hamlet like never before!
