Christmas Eve Peace Walk in Eindhoven
People in Eindhoven light their torches and walk together on December 24!
Walk for peace and tolerance in Eindhoven
The annual Torchlight Procession (Fakkeltocht) in Eindhoven is a traditional walk for peace and tolerance. Every Christmas Eve, thousands of people assemble on the Wilhelminaplein to take a reflective walk through the streets.
Illuminating peace and goodwill
The first edition of the Torchlight Procession in 1992 was a direct response to attacks on Turkish migrants in Solingen, Germany. Since then, thousands of people gather on the Wilhelminaplein every year in order to draw attention to the diversity and spirit of goodwill of the Eindhoven community. The first torch is lit with the World Peace Flame.

Those who wish to join in with the procession can buy a token on the Wilhelminaplein for 2,50 euros, and exchange this for a torch on location. Before December 24, there are also tokens available for 2 euros at selected purchase points.
The procession typically starts at 7pm and last about an hour. From 8pm onward, a programme of themed music, dance and readings is presented by the Eindhoven art centre. The square also has friendly holiday spirit with coffee, hot chocolate, soup and pancakes all being available. After the event on a typical year, participants can join a tour through the Fatih Mosque in Willemstraat.
